I really disagree with her idea that teenagers should stop going on volunteering/missionary trips on multiple levels. First, she says that when she went on a trip in high school, the house construction work that her and her classmates did was insufficient and had to be constantly altered and therefore the teenagers were doing more harm than good. If this was true for all mission trips, she could have a point, but I don’t believe it is and also I would think a more logical conclusion would be that teenagers need more practice doing hands on, real life, things. In our society everything is done for us, either by machines, a minority of tradesmen, or other countries, which leads us to an educational system in which students study words, formulas, and dates for tests and incapable of producing a house for those less fortunate. I want to be a missionary once I’m out of college, and currently am trying to figure out funding for a trip next year – I believe in using your talents and blessing for others and I think volunteering in youth is really significant and awesome.
